Sex, and/or Love

Psychoanalysis and the Science of Desire

This seminar analyzes sexual desire through its principal science: psychoanalysis. Because desire is a force rather than an object, this "science of desire" questions the limits of ordinary empiricism by placing questioning — with its attendant themes of trust and doubt, obsession and uncertainty — at the center of existence. Thus, we will reinscribe the reality of reality through the unconscious.

In addition to psychoanalytical texts from Freud, Laplanche, and Lacan, we will also read from scholars Lynn Margulis, Stella Sandford, Tim Dean, Avgi Saketopoulou, Catherine Malabou, Lauren Berlant, Alain Badiou, Jean-Luc Nancy, and Irving Goh, alongside selected short stories, poetry, films, and more.
